Zimbabwe has contributed 4,400 MT of maize grain to the World Food Programme (WFP) to meet the nutritional wellbeing needs of over 16,000 refugees at Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge.

WFP Representative and Country Director in Zimbabwe, Francesca Erdelmann said the food programme safeguards and promotes food security among refugees in Zimbabwe. The WFP will foot the costs of transport, storage, handling, milling and fortification of the maize.

A first batch of 2170 MT will be lifted to the camp in the coming weeks with the rest of the maize expected next year. This is in line with the call by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres for pledges towards humanitarian assistance.

‘’Zimbabwe is committed to fulfil its international obligation to protect refugees and asylum seekers. The Government appreciates the partnership with the World Food Programme in ensuring that refugees and asylum seekers domiciled in Zimbabwe are food secure,” said Simon Masanga, Permanent Secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.

The World Food Programme provides food and monetary assistance to 16,000+ refugees living in the camp every month. Refugees receive rations of cash and maize intended to meet daily nutritional requirements.

The WFP has provided assistance to the refugee camp since 2016 with children and pregnant women also provided with supplements and medication.
