THE integration of women into agricultural initiatives is crucial for climate-proofing our agriculture and ensuring sustainable practices, Deputy Minister for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Davis Marapira, has said.

Deputy Minister Marapira was addressing stakeholders at the launch of the Mashonaland East chapter of the Zimbabwe Women in Agriculture Network (ZWAN), an organization that embodies the spirit of empowerment and progress in the agricultural sector.

He said the Agriculture, Food Systems and Rural Transformation Strategy (AFSRTS) which is the sector Bible puts women on a strategic pedestal.

“As the Deputy Minister responsible for overseeing women’s empowerment and the Agric4she programme, I am proud to advocate for a future where women lead in agriculture.

“Today, we celebrate the outstanding achievements of women at the recently concluded Harare Agricultural Show. It is heartening to see our women leading the charge in various sectors:

  • The Ministry of ICT, led by Dr Tatenda Mavetera, won the Best Public Sector award.
  • The First Lady’s Environmental and Tourism exhibition stand was recognized as the Best Environment and Smart Agriculture Exhibitor.
  • In agronomy, SeedCo, led by Wendy Madzura, clinched the Best Agronomy award.

“These accolades serve as a testament to the capabilities and contributions of women in agriculture. They affirm that when women lead, we all succeed,” Deputy Minister Marapira said.

The Agric4she programme, launched by First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, exemplifies this commitment, according to the Deputy Minister.

“It is essential to recognize that gender empowerment is not just about uplifting women; it is about creating an environment where both men and women can thrive together.

“The appointment of a male National Coordinator for Agric4she is a clear indication that this vision is inclusive and equitable. As we embark on this new chapter with ZWAN, I want to emphasize the importance of gender mainstreaming, equity, and equality,” he added.

Scholars have pointed out, women’s empowerment is not just a social imperative; but it is an economic necessity while studies have also consistently proven that when women participate fully in the economy, communities thrive.

“The integration of women into agricultural initiatives, such as the Presidential Poultry Scheme and the Pfumvudza programme, is crucial for climate-proofing our agriculture and ensuring sustainable practices,” said Marapira.

Zimbabwe aligns with the various policies and blueprints by the United Nations, the African Union, and SADC relating to women’s empowerment which Deputy Minister Marapira said underscore government’s commitment to gender equality and the integral role women play in achieving sustainable development goals.
