SMUGGLING IS A SERIOUS OFFENCE
A recent official directive from the Secretary for Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion has sharpened the enforcement teeth of Section 193 of the Customs and Excise Act.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1. SEIZURE & FORFEITURE: Not only will smuggled goods be seized and forfeited, but the VEHICLE, SHIP, or AIRCRAFT used to transport them is also subject to IMMEDIATE FORFEITURE.
2. NO RESERVATION: This is a final measure. Your vehicle can be forfeited “without reservation.”
3. DUTY THRESHOLD CROSSED: If the value of the smuggled goods is greater than the payable duty, ZIMRA will automatically forfeit those goods—and, critically, the vehicle used to move them.
🔥THE BOTTOM LINE: Whether you own the car, borrowed it, or were simply asked to carry a box for a friend—if that box contains smuggled goods, you risk losing your most valuable asset.
